What You May See from a Zambezi Cruise
Wildlife on a Zambezi cruise: how often guests name hippos, crocodiles and elephants in their reviews, where the boats go and why daylight matters.
Hippos are the animal you are most likely to see from a Zambezi cruise, then crocodiles and elephants; giraffes, zebras, monkeys and impala turn up on the banks some evenings. Nothing is promised. In the newest reviews of Pure Africa’s two cruises, about one in five guests who wrote anything on the sunset cruise named hippos, and about one in six on the dinner cruise, where part of the evening is dark. For the best chance, take the sunset cruise, with two hours of daylight: Pure Africa’s on the Zambezi Explorer is from $69 a person (checked November 2026).
The calendar above is Pure Africa’s sunset cruise on the Zambezi Explorer: two hours upstream past the banks and back towards the spray of the falls, with canapés and drinks and hotel transfers in Victoria Falls town.
Where the boats go
The cruises leave the jetties above Victoria Falls and idle upstream among the islands. On the Zimbabwean bank is the Zambezi National Park, which ZimParks describes as 40 km of Zambezi River frontage, joined to the Victoria Falls National Park, the two covering 56,000 hectares; across the water is Zambia’s Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park. The animals are wild and come and go as they please: hippos in the channels between the islands, crocodiles on the sandbanks, and elephants coming down through the trees to drink or swimming across between the islands.

How often guests mention each animal
| Animal | Sunset cruise, Zambezi Explorer | Dinner cruise, Zambezi Breeze | Sunset cruise, African Queen (Zambia) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hippos | About 1 in 5 | About 1 in 6 | About 1 in 5 |
| Crocodiles | About 1 in 7 | About 1 in 11 | About 1 in 7 |
| Elephants | About 1 in 9 | About 1 in 9 | About 1 in 9 |
| Reviews read | 177 with text | 201 with text | 54 with text |
The share of guests who wrote a review and named the animal, in the newest 350 GetYourGuide reviews of each cruise (all 118 for the African Queen), read in November 2026. Many guests write only about the food or the sunset, so the real sighting rate is higher than the share who mention an animal.
What the numbers say: hippos are the likeliest sight, crocodiles and elephants are a good chance but not a given, and fewer dinner-cruise guests mention animals, because part of the evening is dark. A handful of guests saw nothing at all; one family on the Zambezi Explorer saw no animals while relatives on the same cruise another evening saw plenty, and another guest felt the big boat could not get close enough to the bank for the crocodiles.
Elephants crossing the river
The sight guests remember most is a herd of elephants swimming across the Zambezi in front of the boat. In October 2026 alone, six reviewers of Pure Africa’s dinner cruise described a herd crossing the river during their evening. It cannot be booked, but it happens, and it is one more reason to have your camera out before the first course.

Crocodiles on the river
Yes, the Zambezi has crocodiles, and the cruises are one of the safest ways to see them, from the deck. In November 2025 the Zimbabwean press reported a female crocodile nesting on Luyando Island, known as Long Island, that had become a regular sight for the cruise boats. At low water the sandbanks show, and crocodiles bask on them, so look for them while it is still light.
Giving yourself the best chance
- Choose daylight. A sunset cruise, or a dinner cruise from October to March when the light lasts longer (see the best time).
- Pick the outside of the boat. Front-row and rail seats see the banks; ask for one if your booking lets you.
- Bring binoculars and a zoom lens. The boats keep their distance from the animals, and on a big boat the bank can be some way off.
- Look early. The light goes quickly after sunset, and a couple of dinner-cruise guests saw no animals because it was dark too soon.
