The Best Time for a Zambezi Dinner Cruise
Best time for a Zambezi dinner or sunset cruise: sunset month by month, daylight at dinner, the flood and the low water, and cool winter evenings.
The dinner and sunset cruises above Victoria Falls run all year, so the best time is about light, not season. From October to March the sun sets between about 6:15 pm and 7 pm, and a dinner cruise that boards at 5 pm has more than an hour of daylight for the river and its animals; from May to August it sets before 6:10 pm, the air cools fast, and most of the meal is eaten in the dark. Pure Africa’s dinner cruise on the Zambezi Breeze runs every evening from 5 pm to 8 pm, from $110 a person (checked November 2026).
The calendar above is Pure Africa’s dinner cruise: three hours from the Pure Africa Waterfront, four courses on the Zambezi Breeze or six on the Zambezi Reflections, with the drinks included and hotel transfers in Victoria Falls town.

Calculated for Victoria Falls, Central Africa Time (no daylight saving). The light lasts a little after the sunset time.
The sunset cruises move with the seasons to stay in the light: Wild Horizons sails at 4:30 pm from September to April and at 4 pm from May to August, and Pure Africa’s Zambezi Explorer at 4:30 pm in summer and 4 pm in winter. Pure Africa’s dinner cruise boards at 5 pm all year; Wild Horizons’ Malachite leaves the jetty at 5 pm from May to August and at 5:30 pm from September to April.

The river through the year
The Zambezi above the falls rises and falls by more than ten times over the year. The Zambezi River Authority’s readings at Victoria Falls make the shape plain:
| Reading | Flow |
|---|---|
| 1 April 2026, the flood peak | About 4,200 m³ a second |
| 11 May 2026 | 3,526 m³ a second |
| 26 October 2026 | 296 m³ a second |
| 15 October 2024, the drought year | 197 m³ a second |
Zambezi River Authority hydrology bulletins.
In the flood months, March to May on the readings above, the river runs high and broad between the islands and the spray of the falls stands highest downstream of the boats. In the low months, from about September, more sandbanks show along the banks, and crocodiles bask on them. The cruise boats work the wide, calm stretch above the falls in both; in the drought of late 2024, with the river at one of its lowest readings, the Zimbabwean press reported boat cruises still running every day.

Closures and rule changes
No cruise suspension, river closure or new navigation rule on this stretch of the Zambezi was reported in the Zimbabwean or Zambian press in the twelve months to November 2026. The one change was to the price: ZimParks’ 2026 tariff, in force since late January 2026, set the Zambezi River fee at US$12 for international visitors. Your operator decides on the day if wind or a storm makes the river unsafe, and the cancellation terms are on your booking.
Weather on the deck
- Cool evenings: the air on the water cools once the sun has gone, most of all in the southern winter, May to August, when most of dinner is after dark. Shearwater asks its guests to bring a jacket; bring a warm layer.
- Rain: one reviewer of the African Queen sailed through a downpour in February with poor visibility, and another, writing in April about a rainy-season cruise, found sightings limited, though still counted about ten hippos. Your operator decides on the day whether the boat goes out.
When we would go
For the animals and the sunset together, go from September to March, when a 5 pm dinner cruise still has more than an hour of light on the water. For the falls at their fullest, go from March to May, and pair a dinner cruise with a sunset cruise on another evening. Sunset cruise or dinner cruise helps you choose, and wildlife on a Zambezi cruise has the share of reviewers naming each animal.
